BM Algae Enthusiasts - Camp mtg in Berkeley 2/13/07

Fellow Algae Enthusiasts,

Your intrepid algae adventurers Meggio & Dr Friendly have teamed up with another BM algae team -- the Chlorophyl Collective -- to create a synergistic symbiotic algae installation of unprecedented magnitude ... we will be removing greenhouses gases from air and exhaust, transforming it (and possibly waste water as well) into biodiesel and powerful edible anti-oxidants before the public's eyes as they share the algae's high-oxygen breath...

Looking for visual artists, architects, construction workers, educators & explainers, algae tenders, greenhouse makers, audio artists, scientists, ecosystem visionaries, gas and liquid system engineers, and all lovers of single-celled living ...

your input is invited ... come and meet us and our new collaborators. we will soon be submitting the proposal.

7 pm Tuesday February 13th,

Save-the-World Algae Farm BM 07
SAVE THE PLANET WITH
*ALGAE*

Interactive installation at Burning Man aka Greening Man 2007.

Biofuels are all over the news these days as a non-toxic way to eliminate greenhouse gases and our dependency on petroleum. But, to grow enough fuel for the U.S. using land crops (soybeans, switchgrass, ?waste? cellulose, etc.) would require more than the entire area of the country and cause massive ecological damage. How can we grow all the fuel we need without injuring our precious cropland, topsoil, and water supplies?

Microalgae produce prodigious amounts of biodiesel fuel and can be grown in salt water. This means it can be farmed in oceans, inland salt water lakes or non-productive land area (such as the playa!), reserving our fertile land and fresh water for ecosystems and growing food. Algae are also many times more productive per acre than any other biofuel technology. For example, a one-acre algae pond (208 feet x 208 feet) could supply fuel to 10+ ordinary diesel cars year-round. Algae can simultaneously treat wastewater and produce valuable co-products (fertilizer, nutrients, pigments, etc.). Because of the simplicity of making biodiesel from algae oil, DIY-ers, cooperatives, environmentalists, developing countries, and just about anyone can participate in this economical, eco-friendly approach to fuel-self sufficiency.

We are seeking collaborators and like-minded spirits to build and operate an inspirational educational algal biodiesel production facility for the 2007 Burning Man festival and beyond. We will show 40,000+ burners how to grow and harvest fast-growing, clean-smelling algae and make it into fuel!

We are building a greenhouse sanctuary to house the algae pool and Zen teahouse where we will serve green algae smoothies in the humid, oxygen-rich atmosphere generated by the algae. Evaporated water will be returned to the pond, minimizing water loss. Adjacent will also be the biodiesel oil washing system, and an area for educational exhibits. The minimal energy required for the algae growth and processing will be supplied by solar cells and solar heaters.

In the current conception, the algae pond will be approximately 6 inches deep and circle around a central lounge zone. Air-plants and algae-inspired art will also hang in the space, creating a healthful, contemplative atmosphere.

If you are interested and would like to help out, please mail us or come to our upcoming organizational meetings on the development of this playa installation. Enthusiastic algae farmers, educators, engineers, designers and builders are most welcome!

SF Liberation Radio Goes Head-to-Head vs. FCC http://indybay.org
Sun Feb 11 2007 Ninth Circuit Court Convenes on UC Berkeley Campus to Hear Oral Arguments
Three years after it was raided by armed federal marshals, SFPD and FCC agents, SF Liberation Radio will have its day in court on Wednesday, Feb. 14th, in a special federal court session convening on the UC Berkeley campus. SFLR, through counsel Mark Vermeulen and other pro bono attorneys from the National Lawyers Guild, will argue that the federal government violated the station’s first amendment rights when it obtained a warrant for the seizure of the equipment through a back-door, ex parte procedure. The US Government utilized a maritime law to conduct the raid without giving advance notice to the station, arguing that a radio station is literally like a ship that may sail away in the night.

Come to San Francisco General Hospital
on Valentine's Day to show support for
  reinstating the local SF (city-county)
Medical Marijuana Card Program
in the face of an enormous fee hike in the state card
program.

....
The cards are necessary to enter the dispensaries and
hold and smoke medical marijuana "legally" in CA. But
given that many patients live under the poverty level
and cannot afford both the doctors visit and the card
this hike will criminalize the poor. So the homeless
in Golden Gate Park cannot access the dispensaries. So
the folks on SSI might go to jail....

2006 photos by Russ Juskalian
Leave it to a place like San Francisco to host the most visible incarnation of the Pillow Fight's flash-mob-esque gathering, and subsequent public pillow fight. I would say that a safe thousand people were milling around Justin Herman Plaza at Embarcadero and Market Streets in Downtown San Francisco. As the Ferry Building's clock struck 6pm, the lovey-rage could be cut with a knife from the air around. As 6pm approached, two lines were formed, people wielding pillows took one last breath of air: and running full speed at one another, a Braveheart-like scenario played out. The feathers were everywhere, pilling up to six inches in some parts.

Thursday: Community Tree Sit-in, please come and show your support

Dear Friends of the Oaks,

You are invited to participate in a Community Tree Sit-In this Thursday Feb 15 to make a major statement of support on behalf of the Oak Grove Tree-Sit.

This is a call for volunteers to take brief 30 minute to one hour turns in a low height secure tree platform. (This is the same platform where Shirley Dean, Betty Olds, and Sylvia McLaughlin sat, safely accessible via ladder.)

We're holding this event because UC administration is telling the media that the tree-sit protest is not supported by the broader community. The University Administration also announced Monday that they are considering plans to fence off the grove and evict the current tree-sitters.

This is a critical moment. Your support can make a real difference.

To demonstrate just how diverse our supporters are, including students, faculty members, and community members, we're asking you to please come join us for the event on Thursday.

The event will be structured as follows:

- Volunteer Tree-Sitters will spend a 1/2 hour to 1 hour in the tree. (WEATHER expected to be dry!)

- Press conference Thurs at 9am (Please come, whether you are a tree-sit volunteer or just supporter)

- a sit-in/vigil for 24 hours, from Thurs 9am to Fri at 9am.

If you would like to participate, please contact Matthew at 510-841-4061 or 510-684-7233 (feel free to leave a voicemail), or respond to this email, and we can answer any questions you have and schedule you for a time to sit in the tree (which can be anytime between Thurs 9am and Fri 9am).

Thanks for your continued support! For the trees,

the Save the Oaks at the Stadium Coalition

February 15: National Student Strike Against the War

Students at UC - Santa Barbara have initiated a one day student strike against the war on February 15th. February 15th marks the 4th anniversary of when millions of people came out around the world to protest Bush's planned war on Iraq. In the wake of Bush's escalation of a war that has already caused the deaths of 655,000 Iraqis and over 3,000 US soldiers, and threats to attack Iran, this student strike is urgently needed, and must spread to other campuses quickly. Now is not the time to be waiting for Congress to make slow incremental steps towards some eventual phased withdrawal. Now is the time for millions of people to get out and demand an end to the war immediately and the Bush administration be impeached for war crimes.

Vigil for animals on the 15th, as the Year of the Dog ends...UCSF sued again

Dear Animal Advocates, Companions, Lovers, Liberators and Vigilers!

The next vigil on behalf of animals incarcerated and exploited in laboratory experiments at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will be held on the third Thursday of the month (as usual) - February 15, 4:30 PM (till about 6 PM). This will be the last vigil of the Year of the Dog (Chinese Calendar); the Year of the Boar (or Pig) begins on February 18.

The vigil will be held at UCSF's Parnassus Campus at 513 Parnassus Avenue in San Francisco. (Please see information on public transportation to UCSF below.)

UCSF sued again: Once again I have sued UCSF because of the university's delinquency in answering several records requests I had made pursuant to the California Public Records Act. Corey Evans, attorney at law, filed suit on my behalf just today, Friday, February 9, 2007. On the one hand, I feel lucky that I have acquired the services of Mr. Evans, a gentleman (in the truest sense of the word) and successful lawyer. Yet on the other hand, it is a shame that I have had to go to such ends to acquire information that I am entitled to by law. In any case, we will be attempting to acquire a variety of UCSF documents, including information on research that UCSF has contracted with the US Department of Defense to conduct, research protocols involving dogs at the university, medical records for dogs used in a cardiology research project, and UCSF's Annual Report of Research Facility for 2006. Corey Evans feels we have a good case, and success is likely; thus we may have these important documents by early spring. Time will tell.

Note Regarding Public Transportation: If you would like to take public transportation to UCSF, the San Francisco Muni buses #6 and #43 both go right by the vigil's venue on Parnassus Avenue; also you can take the N-Judah streetcar, get off at Carl & Arguello streets, and take the elevator (going up) within the UCSF facility to get to Parnassus Avenue. If you are coming from the East Bay, you can take BART, get off at any stop between Embarcadero and Civic Center in San Francisco, and then take an N-Judah streetcar going outbound (and follow directions above regarding N-Judah streetcar).

And please remember to be kind to yourself, as well as other animals. Hope to see you at the vigil - take care!
Bob O'Brien

Alex Wilson, Executive Editor of Environmental Building News, will discuss the concept of passive survivability--a building's ability to maintain critical life-support conditions if services such as power, heating fuel, or water are lost--and why it should become a standard design criterion for houses, apartment buildings, schools, and certain other building types. Co-sponsored with Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility.

Dear Friends of the Environment and Dance!

Now here is a great reason to get together next week:

An evening of excellent music (live and DJ'd) great food and great community (to rally around a great cause): All on the occasion of an auspicious birthday!

Julia Butterfly Hill’s birthday bash fundraiser for Circle of Life:

Lydia’s Organics, Groove Garden and three great local acts have banded together to throw a fundraiser for what we believe to be very worthy cause – especially in this time of heightened environmental awareness. That cause is Circle of Life:

Based in Oakland, Circle of Life was founded to promote the sustainability, restoration and preservation of life. It is a stand for peace, justice and environmental sustainability; and in that space, it creates powerful events and meaningful opportunities for people and organizations to make a difference in the world we share.

All talent involved, bands and artists alike, are donating time and creativity to Circle of life. Lydia's Organics has underwritten the entire cost of the event. Circle of Life will receive 100% of the door!!

So in the spirit of The Groove Garden come join us for an outstandingly good time - - and we'll see you on the dancefloor!

The evening commences with a community dinner featuring the excellent culinary forays of food pioneer and respected chef, Lydia Kindheart

Save the Date for Solstinox - March 3, 2007
Do you all remember that one night of the year we are farthest from the Man, yet equally distant from two encounters with his flames?
Do you all remember the intense playa energy this planetary alignment generates, and how hard it kicks us into the season of Man?
It’s coming back. Soon!
This year, it will be at Mighty in SF. It will be mighty big. The events committee that puts on SF Decom will make it happen. And it will be a fundraiser for Black Rock Arts Foundation. This year, the vision we created in 04 is all coming together!
That special night of the year our spirits named Solstinox is coming back March 3. If you don’t save the date, you must not remember…
